cant believe I need to ask for help on this considering Ive got some crets..but I am stumped. When opening up internet options and navigating to auto complete features, I have two options shaded out that I really want to use. Those options are

1).User names and passwords on forms

2).Prompt me to save passwords

for the life of me..i give in! I have actually posted on the ms technical forums and have received no replys :(

So I did a google search and found this informative site. So here I am :)

Hope you can help and thanks for taking the time to read my post.

sorry for failing to mention this ..but I did search allforums here and found things somewhat relative to the feature but not my particular issue. Just wanted to let you guys know I did search first :)

Any chance someone hacked the registry and disabled these functions?

To enable them, surf to the following keys and set the strings to "yes":

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Use FormSuggest
Data Type : String = "yes"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FormSuggest Passwords
Data Type : String = "yes"

thanks for the reply. this is what i found.

form suggest was set to yes
form suggest passwords was set to no

i changed that to yes.
to no avail.
both options are still shaded out in autocomplete options

hmmm...interesting situation eh? lol

Are you on a network in an office? It's possible the SA used a policy editor for IE to disable those options intentionally.

If this is your PC, I'd recommend repairing the installation for 5.5, or if it comes down to it, upgrade to IE 6.0 SP1.

sorry for the lack of information in my original post. but this pc is in a network. i failed to mention that thinking that because i disconnected the network from this pc and rebooted .. i would have known of there was a script loading with my profile. i never considered that there could have been a script on install that stopped this from happening. however..

i did try the articles and the reg changes. i did upgrade to 6.0 sp1 and have the same problem.

so i figure i have got to find this script and edit it somehow. hmm...the plot thickens.

i just roamed over to a few other lan pcs in my area and all are the same way. im on a mission...the script has got to be on this pc locally or something. to be continued.....

I highly recommend you contact your tech support there. It's not necessarily a "script" per say. An SA can use a policy editor on each Win95/98 pc to set permissions for things like security, control panel items, IE options, etc.

You would have to find a way to sidestep the policy editor. There are ways, which I'm sure you can find floating around on the net...

i hath solved the problem! woohoo! well it wasnt a problem per say...but woohoo. so fyi to any who deals with the same situation. carrr was very close. open the reg (regedit) and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel

he was right about the options.
FormSuggest should have a value of 0
FormSuggest Passwords should have a value of 0

In my instance, FormSuggest was set to 1 deactivating my ability to store password.

So I guss this works both ways. For sys admins and end users :)

thanks for all your help guys. Couldnt have done it without ya's.

doh..im so defeated. on reboot this no longer works. so theres a script that is being pulled from the server on load up. see, we dont see any of the sys admins here. i work for ford moco and you can imagine how big this place is. lol. they office out of another building about 5 miles away. sooo..i could go and perform the above action daily on login..or i could develop a ini or a bat file to run it for me. but i am not sure how i would write out the executable portion in the bat file to accomplish such a task. any suggestions?

well here is what i did. i went to the correct reg entry that i edited. i exported that reg entry to desktop and gave it a random name. seriously, now it works. wether i log off and on the network or just reboot several times. the options are availble for me consistantly. so i went over to my friends pc and did the exact same thing and it worked for him as well. so im happy. it works. but at the same time im baffled by that. does anyone know why doing what i did would actually force the setting to not be over written by the script?

my intention was to simply have the reg file on my desktop to double click after i rebooted.

go figure.

ok..if your still interested..lol.

i found that my lan settings in internet explorer was in fact pointing to a script on my companys proxy server. i took the ip of the proxy server and entered it in manually into the inet advanced lan options. so i have essentially bypassed this cript. now its working repeatedly. interesting eh? either that or i got to much time on my hands. lol
