So, my girlfriend is running Windows XP on a raid sata drive. She was having trouble with QuickTime crashing her computer. She started up QuickTime, then promptly got a blue screen of death. When her machine restarted she got an error along the lines of "autocheck not found skipping autocheck." Then her machine reboots. I've searched extensively online for solutions to this problem, but it seems as though most people get this error message from partitioning errors. I tried running chkdsk /r from the windows xp recovery console. It said it had repaired some things, but the error message is still there. I made some partition magic boot disks, and booted it up to check to see if the partition was active, it was, although the drive labels for both the partitions she had were missing. When I used partition magic to check her drives for errors it says "Error 1527: bad update sequence number" twice. This is really killing me. I can't resize the partition in PM so that I can reinstall XP on another partition. I'm beginning to loose all hope in repairing this problem. It's really ridiculous that a modern operating system would allow a program to cause data corruption that would crash the OS! What a pos! Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated, otherwise I'll be doing damage control.

From the recovery console prompt give
diskpart
list partition
[note the number n for the one where the XP is installed]
select partition=n
active
exit
[this will ensure that the boot will go looking to the right partition as the active one].

Next steps:

BootCfg /Rebuild
fixboot
fixmbr

and
exit
to reboot

FYI, I have been able to reapir the problem. I realized that I had not been supplying the RAID drivers to the Windows XP install CD. I had her download the drivers and do chkdsk /r again. It repaired some problems the first time. She restarted, but she was still getting the error. So I had her try doing chkdsk /r again. It repaired some more errors. This time when she restarted, windows booted properly. The next thing I was going to try was to turn off the autocheck by using the chkntfs command. I was then also going to try the Fixmbr and Fixboot commands to see if that would help. Lucky for me, and her, chkdsk was able to fix things. I was actually plesently suprised that microsoft did something right for once. Although, if they prevented the data corruption in the first place, it would have been preferable!

Guys,

I have more or less the same problem. Except the cause is different:

I gave my Windows XP SP1 the command to check the harddisk drive. I rebooted my pc and after the check windows didn't reboot by itself. So I manually shut off my pc (with the power button). After I booted again windows seemed to go on with what appeared to be the last final things of the diskcheck. But then it prompted: autocheck program not found skipping autocheck.

I looked for my WinXPSP1 CD and tried to boot to the recovery console. But it seemed to hang while inspecting my hardware. I worried that my harddisk failed but my bios detected it properly.

So, is it the same problem. And has anyone have any clues for me??

I appriciate any help.

Your drive manufacturer will have diagnostic software that will boot from floppy and check your hard drive thoroughly.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
