Ok. Here is something I've been watching for a while now. I've seen it on a few different machines. When you open AutoCAD 2002, then open a drawing and work on it, the page file usage just climbs and climbs until it crashes. Even when the system is idle, it sits at a stead usage until you start working again, then it continues to climb. The only way to clear the usage, is to exit out of AutoCAD. Then if you check the processes, ACAD is still listed, even though you've closed the application. You have to "end process" ACAD for it to stop. ARGGGGGG. Anybody see this before?

What service pack of AutoCAD are you using? I believe memory leaks are a known problem with AutoCAD 2002, and if I remember correctly, one of the service packs addresses this issue - almost. I notice it primarily when performing batch functions - I now restart AutoCAD with each drawing file I am processing. The service packs make the memory leaks less severe, but AutoCAD does still seem to leak.

Also (you probably already know this) the rule of setting your Windows swap file size to 3 times the amount of physical ram does help with the crashing.

Hope that helps
Todd

thanks tcarp. I'm at home now, and can't check, but I remember downloading a service pack about 2 months ago. I think the reason was to fix the memory flush issues. I've set the swap file manually (a while ago) and it does help. Something that may help you, is that it seems that the fewer layout tabs in a drawing the better. Not necessarily less geometry or viewports in the layout tabs, but just a fewer number period. This doesn't help too much, as we currently run projects in one file, and they can get fairly large. Big projects are seperate files. We're planning to upgrade to ADT 2005 and subscription, but in the meantime, I have to work with this. Also, the problem seems to be more severe on machines with Rambus (RDRAM). Any other suggestions?
