I'm taking on a new project for an engineering company based in NY. They just opened an office in Chicago and would like the 2 offices to be seamless. They are going to use VoIP and a VPN (T-1 speed) to connect the 2 offices. My question is what is the best way to handle the AutoCAD drawings? People from either office could be working on any file at different times of the day. Anyone else had to deal with this?

This is a function best left to your document management system. Don't get me wrong, you could have AutoCAD open files across VoIP and VPN, but because you can, doesn't mean you should. Best bet is have your document management system check the file out so the user is using it/modifying it locally (either on their respective hard drive or local server) and then when finished, the document management system should put the file back. You'll find performance much better this way and reliability much higher. AutoCAD could sometimes open a file quickly other times it could take upwards of a 1/2 an hour. The document management system was quicker and much more reliable.

There are several online archive vaults available (like buzzsaw) but these are dependent upon a quick connection. It may be worth while looking at some of these.
