Can any of you guys please help. I have a cell containing a link to another spreadsheet which I need to automatically update itself say every 5 seconds. I have searched this forum and others but either I'm entereing the wrong text to search or this question hasn't been posted before which I find a little surprising. I have tried auto refresh but that only works on open/close functions.

I think you probably need VBA so post and search would be better in Forum707 and the ontime function. have a look at these:

Thanks Gavona for the link you provided thread707-1179022: UPdate Links every 10 minutes in excel it worked perfectly apart from my syntax regarding the link to the spreadsheet.

Fantastic quick response even on a Sunday night. Cheers

By default links are automatically updated when both workbooks are opened (at least in the same excel instance). Have you tried to change source and observe the target cell?

combo

A bit off topic, but building on Combo's point, something I discovered today:
I had links to another workbook - a cell containing more than 255 characters. With the linked workbook closed my vlookup only returned the first x characters (255 I assume but I didn't count them). When I opened the workbook as combo said the link updated. What surprised me is that it then returned all the characters. Further testing has so far confirmed that this behaviour is reliable.
