Can the Avaya PBX be set to test an analog trunk daily, and report if it goes out of service?

We have a few locations where there is one analog trunk for E911, and without regular use, we wouldn't know if it got knocked out.

Maybe ASA could help with the "notification" part?

You can do this with ASA under trunk Monitor. You just need to leave ASA open and it can dial into your switch as frequently as you request (I used to have it check every half hour) and email you in the case of downed trunks. It's also a good practice as an in-house admin to have the other stuff run as well (Trunk Analyzer, etc).

Unfortunately its not practical to have the ASA open and dialing in frequently. Might be the only option, though.

I was hoping there was a way for the Definity itself to report the trunk being out. Perhaps assigning the trunk as a critical or major alarm, for example.

You can do this if you have CMS. I have CMS trunk group exceptions for All Trunks Busy, Trunk Failures, More than 0 trunk maintenance busy, and More that 0 failures on a single trunk.
