I want to run windows 2000 unattended. How do I set it up to automatically start without going to the logon screen.
I want to run a web server and if the power goes off I need the compter to reboot (which it does) and to go back to the windows 2000 desktop. The logon screen keeps stopping me.
Thankx!

For security Reason Windows 2000 Server BY DEFAULT will NOT do auto login.(I have found no way to doit as of yet) It is a security precaution. I have not tried TWEAUKUI as of yet. I will try it in the morning and get back to you. Unless some one else already knows. James Collins

Just out of curiousity, why do you need it to go to the desktop? Web services start automatically without you logging in.

I need to go straight to the desktop so my dns naming service client will start. I'm using a dns naming service because I have a dynamic ip address. The service's client will point to whatever my current ip address is. Thanks!

This is for NT, but i see no reason why it should not work for 2k. Use the Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) to add your logon information, as follows:

Start REGEDT32.EXE and locate the following Registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Establish your domain name, account name, and password, using the values you would normally type when logging on. You should assign the following values:
DefaultDomainName
DefaultUserName
DefaultPassword
NOTE: The DefaultPassword value may not exist. If it doesn't, from the Edit menu, choose Add Value. In the Value Name field, type DefaultPassword. Select REG_SZ for the Data Type. In the String field, type your password, and then save your changes.

Also, if no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows NT automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon key from 1 (true) to 0 (false), thus disabling the AutoAdminLogon feature.

From the Edit menu, choose Add Value. Enter AutoAdminLogon in the Value Name field. Select REG_SZ for the Data Type, enter 1 in the String field, and then save your changes.

Exit REGEDT32.

Exit Windows NT, and then turn off your computer.

Restart your computer and Windows NT. You should be able to log on automatically.

NOTE: To bypass the AutoAdminLogon process, and to log on as a different user, hold down the SHIFT key after you log off or after you restart Windows NT.

It is also important to note that if the DONTDISPLAYLASTUSERNAME value is set to 1, Autoadminlogon does not function.
