What version are you running?
I reported a similar bug that was fixed in 4.3 or 4.4 There was a memory leak in res when the server had dual processors. It affected dual processors and windows 2003 sp2.
If your res server is runinng on xp then you might want to check how often your autosequences are running and make sure they are running and actually finishing. Also we had totals posting to the dashboard every 1 minutes and this caused the service to lock up and we were not able to run any reports.

In what way does it freeze?
Are you running an autosequence and it just has the first line of the autosequence saying starting. If so this was a problem in 3.2 when hyper threading was enabled on the server.
It happened randomly.
