We have the APS database installed in an Oracle 9i instance on a UNIX server. When the database goes down, the CrystalAPS service shuts down on the CE box, a Windows 2000 server.

I tried setting the Services Recovery properties to restart after failure, but this does not work. The shutdown requires a manual restart.

Does anyone know the command that could be added to the database startup script to restart the APS service on the W2K machine? The only solution I found in BO Support assumes both machines are Windows-based and the database is SqlServer.

I think it would be difficult for Oracle to start the service directly (although I don't know for sure).

Do you have any 3rd party cross-platform failover / job management software? you could create a dependency between the two. This would seem the most robust solution.

Or you could get Oracle to just drop a file on the W2K box on Database startup and have a Windows script monitoring the file which starts the APS exe.

I was thinking of UNIX (Solaris) doing the job, not Oracle per se, though it would be in the Oracle startup script.

Hi,
Oracle's service cannot 'talk' directly to the Crystal services..Even if you make the Crystal APS dependant on the Oracle Service being already started, it will still cause problems since Oracle's service starts before the actual database is mounted and opened - it needs to be OPEN before the APS service can connect to it.

The only solution I have found so far is to have all the Crystal services set to Manual and to start them after I have made sure that the database is up and running..
