I am troubleshooting a pc running win xp sp1a which will not power down, windows simply restarts rather than shutting down. The automatic restart feature is diabled.
There is a message in the system event log as follows.

the attempt to power down the computer KATE failed

Any ideas?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Set the value of PowerDownAfterShutdown to 0.

Update your service pack to see if that will resolve it.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

Automatically Reboot Option Does Not Work if the Paging File Is Set to Zero in Windows XP

To get further information about any error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My

Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

************* Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem. ***************
