Auto-Numbering - Create a new field

I am creating a new module in PeopleTools. It is actually a modified version of Company Property. I have a new field in it called ArmoryID. I would like the field to do an auto-number thing when a new record is created. This field will be about 10 characters long, and a number, of course. I have done research on other fields that auto-number in PS, but it really doesn't tell my anything, other than to put in a starting number in the Define Business Rules/Installation page, which lists all the built-in autonumber fields. I looked at each of those, and how they were used, and some code, and it really didn't answer my question. Pretend I don't know anything, and explain in dummy terms.
