Auto Numbering a training Manual

hi All, I'm stressing out! i just found out after talking with my client, that the manual I'm desiging in Indesign CS2 needs auto numbering for the Unit numbers and it's sub numbers.

example:
Unit 2
2.1
2.1.1
2.2.1.A

So if they need to change/add any of the sub unit numbers, the following numbers after the change or addition would auto update.

And this all need to be tracked in the TOC, so that a change in the document, would be reflected automatically in the TOC.
 
...yes, quite a task really, not all that experienced with TOC or auto numbering. This is taken from the help file in CS2:

To define section numbering
In the Pages palette, select the first page in the section you want to define.
Choose Layout > Numbering & Section Options, or choose Numbering & Section Options in the Pages palette.
If you’re changing the numbering options for any page other than the first page of the document, make sure that Start Section is selected. This option marks the selected page as the beginning of a new section.
As necessary, specify the numbering and section options, and then click OK:
To end the section, repeat the section numbering steps on the first page that follows the section.


To update a table of contents
The table of contents is like a snapshot of content in your document. If page numbers in your document change, or if you edit headings or other elements associated with table of contents entries, you’ll need to regenerate the table of contents to update it.
Open the document containing the table of contents.
Do any of the following:
To make changes to table of contents entries, edit your document or booked documents, not the table of contents story itself.
To change the formatting applied to the table of contents title, entries, or page numbers, edit the paragraph or character styles associated with these elements.
To change how pages are numbered (for example, 1, 2, 3 or i, ii, iii), change section numbering in the document or book. (See Numbering pages in a book.)
To specify a new title, include other paragraph styles in the table of contents, or further format table of contents entries, edit the TOC style.
Choose Layout > Update Table of Contents.


Editing a table of contents
If your table of contents requires editing, edit the actual paragraphs in the document—not the table of contents story—and then generate a new table of contents. If you edit the table of contents story, you’ll lose your revisions when you generate a new table of contents. For the same reason, you should edit the styles used to format the table of contents entries, rather than formatting the table of contents directly.
