hi guys
i'm having troubles with my wireless router, apparently i have to do something with the ip address settings but i' a bit confused. below i have included the discussion i had with linksys support it may help you to understand my problem. any ideas?

thanks

abb

abb: i bought a new ADSL gateway kit yesterday and am having difficulties setting it up.

i started the cd wizard and connected the relevant cables. in the final part of the wizard i get the folloing error message.

"Unable to connect to the Router. Check the cable connection from the computer to the Router. Contact Linksys Technical Support for further assistance."

i am using windows xp
i connect to AOL UK
i do not use the AOL software - i currently connect using a USB modem and PPPOE
i have set the vpi/vci to 0,38
i have four lights nmy router, power, wireless, ethernet and dsl.
Edilaine Joi (21889): Okay.
Edilaine Joi (21889): Can you please confirm the model number of your Linksys product?
abb: wag354g
Edilaine Joi (21889): Is this a brand new device?
abb: yes - i bought it new yesterday
Maureen Y(19585): Okay. Did you already reset the router before setting it up?
abb: i have not reset the router
abb: also when i try to connect to 192.168.1.1 it times out
Maureen Y(19585): Did you check the IP address of the computer connected to the router?
abb: when i do ipconfig from dosshell i get 192.168.0.1
Maureen Y(19585): Did you check your computer if it's set to obtain IP address automatically?
abb: i wouldnt know how to do that
abb: does it matter that its AOL that i am trying to connect to?
Maureen Y(19585): No. On your computer, go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click Local Area Network Connection that you are using > Properties > Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties > Then set it to "Obtain IP address automatically."
abb: i have a local area connection icon there, its uner the netwrk bridge section. when i right lick and choose properties i onlt get the general tab and the authentication tab
abb: but i also have a network bridge icon - that has the correct options, shall i change that one? if i do that will it disconenct me right now. (i'm connect using my old usb modem right now)
Maureen Y(19585): Remove the Local Area Connection from Network Bridge.
Maureen Y(19585): Is your computer set now to obtain IP address automatically?
abb: well - i had to put the LAN back on the bridge - so i cold connect to you now
abb: but when i take it ou tthe bridge and remove my usb modem (so i can use the routher) it dissapears, therefore i cannot change that ip setting
abb: because there is no icon there
Maureen Y(19585): How many local area connection do you have on your computer?
abb: my pc is standalone
abb: but when i remove my usb modem i have no LAN icons at all
Maureen Y(19585): But your computer's LAN connection needs to be on "Obtain IP" so that your computer will obtain a valid IP address from the router, so that you may use the router's web utility to configure it.
abb: yes - i understand that. but i dont have a LAN icon so i cant change the properties
abb: the lan icon is only present if: my usb modem is connected and it's bridged

Do you have an ethernet (network) card in the machine?

If the icon is only present when the modem is connected, that could be one possible source of the problem. The LAN icon should always be in the Network Connections page as far as I know.

How are you connecting to your router? via built in switch(ie, what cable) or wirelessly?

When you use this kind of kit you don't use the old modem.

Usually, all you do is disconnect your old modem, then connect with a Cat 5 cable to the built in switch on the router, and then navigate to the routers config page (192.168.1.1 for example), and that's it!

It sounds like your physical connections could be the trouble here.
