Why am I getting the foloowinmg error

Isn't access suppose to be auto generating the key, isn't that the point of setting auto identity insert to on.

Why won't access do what it's meant to!

Do you mean you have set IDENTITY_INSERT ON? I though that was exactly the opposite -> giving you the possibility of entering your own value in stead of letting SQL server provide it through the identity columns increment property.

From what (little) I understand of the errormessage, you need to turn it off again (or not turn it on) to do an ordinary insert, where SQL server gives the identity (autonumber). Difference between Jet and SQL server, is usually that in Access the autonumber is generated at the moment you start registrating, in SQL server, when you save.

? all my tables for the KEY is set to identity = yes, identity seed = 1 , identity increment = 1.

This is what tells SQL to "AUTO" create unique record id's

If I didn't have this set on the SQL table I wouldn't get the record ID.

Oh well I re-assigned the child/parent key relationship, refreshed the linked tables and it's working fine.

must have been a glitch in Access, it seems to have a lot of them at times.

cheers 1DMF.
