auto fill field

just woundering what would be the best way to have a field enter inforamtion related to a certin field...ie. i have a database with a part number in it, when i enter the part number in to a field another field will fill with a the discription of that part...will i need to create another data base with the discriptions and some how tie it to the other database field...i am very new to filemaker so please be gantle...thanks very much in advance

You will need to create a db for the descriptions, In it create 1 record for each item. Then create a relationhip to I would insert a portal in your master based on the relationship you just created, and place the fields you need to see, partnumber, description, etc, use the related fields by choosing the relationship from the list, by default it will be set to current file.
In your master (original db) assign a value list to the partnumber field using values from field - partnumber in your items db, check all values.
This way when you choose a partnumber it will display the rest of the information you need

...when you need just the description of the part, a lookup will also do the job...
