Auto entering text data

I am attempting to create a field in Approach in which text data will be automatically added whenever criteria in another field is met. In other words, if my "serial number" = 12-345, then the data in my "component" field should automatically be entered as "abcdefg". It wouldn't be a formula as the "serial number" is a series of numbers and/or letters and the "component" field is typically textual information. This occurrence recurs for many different "component" fields which are based upon that particular serial number.

Can this be done automatically? If, so........please help!

One way is to use a default modification formula for the text field. I can't tell if this is suitable because the info you give is too vague.

If a formula is not suitable because of the number of different texts, you'll have to create a new lookup table containing all the serial numbers and the text for each one. Join it on serial number and display the text from the lookup table.
