Auto Dial on Buttons Without Lights?

I have a modern Partner-18D phone on an old Partner II R4.1 system. I was not able to get it to program auto dial numbers onto the top 4 buttons, or program anything for that matter. When I select the button I want to program it beeps but nothing comes up on the display when it would normally say "blank" until programmed. Am I missing something, or does the system not accept this, or do I need to program from the MLS-34D that I have or something else?

Your Partner II is too old to recognize those top 4 buttons - that's just the way it is.
