How can I automatically place the date which may include the day of the week as well as the calendar date on a document. I would like to create a templet what would have some routine in it that would auto populate the date. However, once the document was saved under a different name the date would not change when that document was opened at a later time. I hope I'm some what clear.

With office XP, try:
Insert> Field... > Date

From here, you should be able to choose the format you want. Let me know if this works for you!

X

Insert > Field
Categories: Date and Time
Field names: CreateDate
Click Options button
Date-time formats: dddd, MMMM dd, yyyy
Click Add to field button
OK
OK

If you just want to insert the date as text...

Insert > Date and Time (NOT Insert > Fields)
Choose the desired format
OK

Thanks for backing me up, dcompto! 2 votes in, this should be your fix!

Hi rjgthree,

My reading of your query is that you want to be able to insert a specific date automatically - one click!

If so then I suggest that you record a little macro that does what you want in exactly the format you need and store it in your normal.dot.

Once done you can then Add it to your Insert Menu with a name like "InsertAlphaDate" and then it will be available for any of your word documents.

If you need further help let us know.

Thanks for the help. I now have a better understanding on how this can be done. Thanks.
