Authoritative DNS Server on Redhat Enterprise Linux V4

I'm trying to create an authoritative DNS server on RHEL4. I've been able to get it to work as a caching server, but I can't get it to resolve anything for my domain ( mail.mydomain.com). I've created forward and reverse zone files but it doesn't seem to be reading them. I've made sure named.conf is pointing to the zone files as well. I've tried to configure using the gui tool redhat-config-bind and editing the files manually. Naturally, a step-by-step on doing this in RHEL4 would be nice, but any input is apprecitated.

Did you restart the named service after changing the files?

Did you include the zone file references in named.conf?

Did you look at /var/log/messages for errors when you restart named?

Yes to restarting named and referencing the zone files in named.conf. I haven't checked the log messages yet. I'll check those and get back.

Thanks for the reply...

OK, let's start from the start.

How do you KNOW it isn't working? What tests and what errors/output did you receive?

Did you name your server(s) as an authoritative name server at your registrar for the domains in question?

Did you run your "dig/nslookup" commands directly against your server or in general?

More background on what I'm trying to accomplish:

I've got an existing name server running under RH7.1 and Bind 9. That server has been in place and working for a long time.

I've purchased new server hardware and would like to build a new name server using RHEL4 to replace the existing server.

The current name server is registered and working. I'm using the same name and IP address information for the new server so I assume the current registered information will still be accurate.

nslookup gives returns for external sites ( but times out on any local sites (
I'll be taking a look at the logs today.

- Thanks

If I recall correctly, between your old version of RH 7.1 and RHEL vX.x... Redhat's default build/config for named data files moved. Or they did something that required a chroot environment or was it that they required data to be under a ../slaves or ../data subfolder.

You may be correctly configured for old RH but not new RH.

Just another idea.
