Is it possible to authenticate to an NDS tree using DOS commands. I want to do this from a login scipt whilst migrating users between two trees. The Tree command does do what I want but seems to dump you on the first server to respond which isn't what I want, as I have 600'ish users in the old system accross 5 servers with either 100 or 150 licences on each server. I want to be able to specify which server blocks of users authenticate to.

Thanks

You can use the old DOS VLM drivers and configure them for NDS authentication rather than Bindery. If you go to and do a search for VLM, you can download them from one of the links there "It's true, its damn true!"

Thanks, but this would mean modification of the workstation to run the DOS VLM from what I can remember? I would of used this stuff 5-6 years ago with Netware 3.12, but my memory seems to be failing me.

I may well be able to avoid the whole scenario now anyway. Our 4.11 servers are IPX, 5.1 servers are IPX and IP. But as the clients get updated via the Auto client upgrade and pointed at the new server, I shall remove IPX from the client config.

The reason I wanted to "quietly" authenticate them to the old tree in the background was so they wouldn't be prompted to login to the "old tree" after logging in to the "new tree" because of an "old tree" printer or whatever being installed on the computer.

You can do a dos command from a batch file within windows.
login tree\user ie:
LOGIN FS1\DAN
This could be put in the login script of the old server. If it attaches to the old server first, they would login to the new server. They would be prompted for a second login in that case.
A better option would be to use snapp shot (part of Zenworks) to set a default tree in the client parameters on the workstations.
Low tech option:
You could send an email and ask everyone to change the tree setting. You can then look at the logins to see who is still on the old server and "talk them through" the change on the phone.
