Authenication Error

I have windows workstations that are able to connect to our windows 2003 server.
we now are buying macs and when I try to connect to the server it wouldn't let us. the error message says that it cannot authenticate to the server.
anyone knows why?

the pc workstations belong to a domain
the macs belong to a workgroup

it sees the domain but can't log into it.

I'm not trying to join the macs to a domain just map drives to it.
