Several weeks ago I noticed that the audio volume on my system was suddenly lower than normal. MP3 files play well but do not blast anymore; some camtasia software demo programs I made are very difficult to hear with volume turned all the way up; MSN messenger chat very difficult to hear, etc.

I have gone through all "sounds and audio systems" adjustments to no avail. I have also tried adjustments to the Soundmax Digital Audio card but no luck.

It is like a switch has been turned off someplace and only lets the volume go halfway on even though the indicators read normal.

any suggestions?

thanks

Is DirectX up to date?

HOW TO: Resources for Troubleshooting Sound Problems in Windows XP

Some general things to try.

Are the wiring connections a problem?

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Sound.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

This may seem obvious but I have to admit being caught by it myself. If the stereo jack for the speakers comes part way out you will often get some sound but at a very low volume. Try making sure it is all the way in.

To add to OzCDN's suggestion, check again all cables. My hacker 12-year old connected a 7 speaker surround system as a father's day present and it did not work at all. I just moved the cable from sound card out to the mainboard out and it worked fine. (at that point he was deep inside my registry, which I did not want). Check the cables, what appears to be correct may not be.
