Does your audio crackle?
Is it worse when you open an application?
Do graphics applications make it sound terrible?
Do you have a VIA chipset on your mother board?

If so, you probably have a PCI latency problem. Fortunately there is a cure!!!

A programmer named George Breese created a patch that takes care of a "PCI latency issue" that is extremely common with VIA chipsets. What's basically happening is that your sound card is not getting enough time on the PCI bus and is getting "cut off" before it can reliably receive all the data from your CPU. This is what's causing the popping sound, especially when using graphics heavy applications or simply opening a new application.

Go to this link...

On the web page, look for the heading: "PCI Latency" patch for VIA chipsets.

Here is the download link for the patch:

Unzip it to a folder on your hard drive.

Make sure that you also download the "emergency uninstaller" program and follow the instructions on the web page.

Here is the download link for the emergency uninstaller:

If for some reason the patch doesn't work or causes any additional problems to your system, you can recover to your previous configuration by running this.

I had a terrible crackling sound on my system which uses a Creative SBLive! 5.1 sound card and a VIA MVP3 chipset. The problem disappeared completely after installing this patch.

Good luck!!!
