Audio playback in time layout not working

I have imported an aiff audio file into AfterFX and it plays fine if I double-click it in the project window ... however, no sound when I try and play it in the Time Layout window – and I can see audio waveform. Have tried turning up volume in audio palette and selecting and deselecting the audio button in the time controls. I have tried searching HELP and haven't found any solutions.
I have to match VO exactly to picture, so I am at a loss. Thanks for your help.

AE won't allow you to playback RT with picture or scrub audio.

You can preview audio via two methods:

1. RAM PREVIEW: turn the audio icon on.

2. AUDIO PREVIEW: use the period (on the numeric keypad); you can lay down markers as the audio plays back in the audio preview.
