I have an Asus A7V8X-X, the power supply died. I havent paid attention to desktop hardware in a long time. I went and bought a power supply and it says ATX v2.01, i went to put it in my computer and the main power plug doesnt fit, it is too big for the connection on my motherboard!

Do I have to find a regular ATX power supply somewhere or am I doing something wrong?

The ATX 2.01 has four more pins. These four pins are sometimes molded in a way that makes them able to be removed from the other 20-pin connector. At any rate, the 24 pin connector should fit into the 20-pin socket.

At any rate, the 24 pin connector should fit into the 20-pin socket.

That is, if there is enough room on the mobo for the extra bulk of the connector. Look at the shapes of the connectors and match them up, they will only match one way. Determine which pins are un-needed and, with a pair of dykes, nip away at the connector until it fits, then cut & terminate those wires.

Remember to UNPLUG that power supply first!

I'm betting the extra four pin connector will just pull apart from the other 20, they usually do, sometimes it isn't obvious when you look at it but on all the 24pin PSU's I have seen the four block is removable or at least they pivet to one side leaving the traditional 20 intacked.
