Hi,

I am thinking about creating an online Cisco Lab. This would include at least 5 routers, 2 switches and a telco simulator (For ISDN & Frame).

You would have a network drawing (html)and console to all devices via a terminal server.

Is this something you'd find helpful?

Thanks,

Tom Whaley

Yes, i think it would be very helpfull but also very unsafe for your equipments. Unless you would provide security and personal password for each selected person who would like to access.

But still the idea is very good.

An excellent idea!! Because lab time and actual hands on is very hard to come by especially if you're on a tight budget. I think most of us have limited access to this type of equipment and so simulators are what we have to work with, which are sometimes limited to specific lessons.

Security, security, security- I’d be cautious of the intent of whomever you give access to......

This would only be a test lab. Not a real network with any servers or anything.

Thanks for the responses.

Test lab or not, security will bite you if you dont pay attention. For example, my rental lab uses AAA authentication for login and tracking of usage. It also checks each command to verify you have privilages for the command. I happen to use TACACS+ because it's cheap but you could use Radius.

Dont forget to have a way in place to prevent people from stealing the IOS code off the routers/switches..

The lab is also not part of my *real* network. I use a DMZ and a couple of firewalls to keep things apart.

Is it perfect? nope.. but it does keep the casual troublemaker away.
