Attachments open SLOOOWLY in outlook98

This problem just started happening last week. Nothing new has been loaded on pc. She's got win98 and outlook98.
She can open her own excel and word files with no problems.
But get an email with a file attachment, say, in excel. She double clicks it, excel opens, you see a blank gray screen,(like you normally do when excel opens) except it sits there on that screen, (no hour glass either), then after about 30 seconds it finally opens the document.
Any suggestions? I have loaded all patches and updates that could possibly be loaded.

it might be a good idea to save the docs to the desktop or wherever first then open it....as what the Mail program has to do is to create a tmp version of the file on the C:\ so it can be opened.....what virus software is she using?? try disableing it and then open an attachment and see if that makes a difference... also, are the mails stored on her PC, as in a .pst or are you using Exchange Server??? Jay~

she is running norton antivirus. I will try disableing it when she goes to lunch today. Its funny because up until a week or 2 ago, everything opened fine in outlook.
I will also try the suggestion to save it to the desktop.

Well, here is what I did: I set the antivirus to only check on program files, except when doing a manual scan, then it will check all files.
Then I noticed she had an outlook98 fix of somesort loaded. I uninstalled it.
rebooted and so far (crossing my fingers) is working fine.
excel and word docs are opening up fine in her outlook.
