Hi I wanting to attach a new backup unit to an already installed SCSI card. I think the card has two ports one of which i already attached to an external disk array. If I attach this do I need to do anything in particular to get the device to be recognised? Is it best to power off the server before attaching? Any advice/comments would be grateful.
Thanks.

You will probably need to do a reconfigure unless you have the Sun SAN Foundation installed.

reboot -- -r

or

touch /reconfigure
reboot

or

(from OK prompt) boot -r

If you have an EEPROM password set up then you will need to be at the console/terminal to enter it since your using a boot flag.

I attached the device, but this caused the server to hang, so I assumed it crashed. Is it best to power the server off before attaching the device? Thanks.

What are you attaching ? Is it to the second port ? I normally power off the server before I attach anything to a scsi port. Also make sure the device you are attaching is properly terminated.
