We have been trying to assemble a new linux server at work to do some benchmark testing with some heavy duty server software for radiology, but have been having hardware problems. The original system was a KT7-RAID w/ 1Gig T-Bird @ 200MHz and 256MB of PNY PC133 and some god-awful HSF. For some reason the system refused to post for us, so we tried everything known to man to get it to emit some kind of signal, but no dice. It would start the fans, but no beeps or anything, even with/out different RAM/vid card it was dead. We thought the mobo was DOA so we snagged a KT7A and tried it. SAME problem. So we noted the power supply was some off brand 250watt beast, so we threw in an Antec 300watt unit, same problem with both. We inspected the CPU and noted now that there was some severe chipping around the edges, so we figured that CPU was dead. Got in what was allegedly a T-Bird 1.2Gig @ 266MHz, but alas, same problem again in both computers. I have already gotten RMA's for both mobos (but not yet shipped them out) but upon preparing RMA for the KT7A I noted our new 1.2Gig T-Bird was in reality a 1.2Gig AthlonMP!!! Shocked to discover this, I now write this post with one question in mind: does the AthlonMP (ie Palomino) run on a standard KT133/A chipset or only on the 760MP chipset? Thanks!

The AthlonMP as far as I know will not run on the KT133A chipset. Only the 760MP chipset. I too ran into a similar problem where we recieved a "t-birb" 1.2G and put it back in the system and it did not run. After further review of the processor (I was really upset it did not run) I noticed it was an AthlonMP! So I recieved a 760mp based board from my vender and it ran fine. So to answer your question I would say get the MP board. UNLESS someone else has a workaround. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you.
