AT&T 2230 mismatched serial numbers how to reprogram

I'm getting a used cordless phone. 2 - AT&T 2230 handsets and a basestation. I was told they don't have matching serial numbers and won't work together, but there is a way to reprogram them. Does anyone know how to reprogram them so the base station and handsets will work together?
