Hello, I have an Asus P4G8X Motherboard running a Celeron 2.6ghz 400mhz FSB system with a NVIDIA FX 5600 256mb video card and a gig (2x512mb) Kingston 266mhz pc2100 Dimms CL2.5

Now my issue is that my system does not perform the way it should, speed wise, I cannot run BattleField 2 at even medium without it being choppy, I tried Hard Truks 18 wheels of steel's Haulin (minimum req. are 1.2ghz 256mb ram and a 32 mb video card) , and it was uber slow even on bare minimum settings, I thought I had a virus so I wiped my system (Low Level) and reinstalled WinXp SP2 and still no everything is slow, I recently tried Star Trek Legacy on bare minimum settings and it was uber slow, aside from going out and getting another gig of ram or upgrading my CPU which I cannot afford are there any ways I can speed up my system safley that might allow me to play the games I love properly??

If those games previously performed at decent frame rates, then make sure that the video card's acceleration rate is maxed out, the CPU is running at the correct speed in BIOS, all of the RAM is recognized, and the MB chipset drivers are installed.
If no luck, then try different video card drivers.
If no luck, then do a clean boot. If that works, then something is running in the background that's slowing things down.

reinstalled WinXp SP2 and still no everything is slow

I have this exact board but in the SiS flavor...P4S8X. If you are experiencing major slowdowns and it's not the OS, then where do we look? First, I assume that it once ran well, and played those games fine. What has changed? The hard drive may be wearing out or in dire need of defragmentation. The RAM might have gone bad, but that would usually cause Blue Screen. The PSU may not be providing enough current, the processor could be overheating, or the video card could be failing. Or the mainboard could be dying. In other words, everything is suspect until confirmed innocent.

I would recommend download & installing (or install from board CD) AsusProbe, it will give you some idea of the CPU temp. and voltage. Make sure your board's BIOS is the latest and download and install the latest chipset and video drivers.

I would not buy more RAM or upgrade the CPU, I would get a newer vidcard first. See if you can borrow components from friends like an old HDD or PSU and start eliminating suspects.

Best of luck.

Tony

Trying clearing CMOS and selecting "Load BIOS defaults". Also check with the Asus website that you have the latest BIOS update installed.
