asterisk installation with 2 NIC cards

To allow external access to asterisk, would like to have to have two NIC cards, one with private one with public IP. Has anyone done this before?

I have setup several Asterisk systems with dual NIC cards exactly as you suggest. The important thing is to make sure that the default gateway address is the Internet facing card otherwise remote site client and SIP/IAX2 servers will not be able to connect to the machine. I have also implemented some packet shaping on the Internet facing network adapter to improve voice quality.
