Hi Hope someone can help me with this. In an asterisk box when I try to got to edit my stations.conf get this message...

E325: ATTENTION
Found a swap file by the name ".stations.conf.swp"
owned by: root dated: Fri Nov 7 03:13:48 2008
file name: /etc/asterisk/includes/stations.conf
modified: YES
user name: root host name: sip.smc.com
process ID: 12218
While opening file "stations.conf"
dated: Mon Nov 24 06:30:53 2008
NEWER than swap file!

(1) Another program may be editing the same file.
If this is the case, be careful not to end up with two
different instances of the same file when making changes.
Quit, or continue with caution.

(2) An edit session for this file crashed.
If this is the case, use ":recover" or "vim -r stations.conf"
to recover the changes (see ":help recovery").
If you did this already, delete the swap file ".stations.conf.swp"
to avoid this message.
"stations.conf" 349L, 12750C
Press ENTER or type command to continue

Have you tried the suggestion in (2)?

I want to be good, is that not enough?

How would you say is the best way to backup this server.

KenC answered your first question: you abandoned or crashed a vim editing session. the system is trying to tell you what to do about the recovery file available to you.

Your second question should be a new thread and should contain a great deal more detail about the size of data, frequency of backup, hardware for backup available to you and any risks you are trying to control.

If you put FreePBX GUI on your asterisk box, it will give you the option to back up the system. It will also make administration of the system much easier.

What I have learned is that Asterisk works so much better if it was not a gui based...
