Associating a File With a Program to Use For It in XP

In 2K, when I try to open a file Windows doesn't recognize, it makes a list of programs and asks me which one I want to use. It also lets me select a program that is not in its list (and not in Program Files) and open the file using that program. 2K then added that program to its list of programs for future unrecognized files.

XP gives its list and ignores anything else I tell it. I can't get it to use any other program. I've used description and Browse but when I find the program to use, XP ignores it and takes whatever program it had highlighted in its list.

How do you train XP to listen and use the program I want and then associate it with that file?

Thanks

That's exactly the way XP works for me. right Click on the file, choose open it brings up the Open With dialog and I use browse to choose the application. You need to choose the executable file for the program you want such as [red]someapp.exe[/red] It will then place that entry into the list and it should be selected.

Just click o.k and it will lauch the application and open the file in it.

Alternatively you can use the Folder Options applet from Control Panel. open the File Types Tab, scroll the list until you find the extension for your file type.

If its not there you can create it sing the "New" Button.

Once its either created or selected click o the Advanced Button, Then on the left of the new dialog click on New to create a new action for the type. Give it a name that will appear on the right click menu for it, and then either type the path to the executable or use the browse button to look for it. Once you are done o.k your way out and the association should be set.
