We have a SharePoint based document management system that generates assignment emails including a URL on the SharePoint site.

SharePoint being SharePoint, things are only fully compatible with Internet Explorer.

However the links open in the default browser, which may not be IE.

Is there anyway that a URL can be associated with a specific browser?

You can't force a user computer to open whatever browser you feel they should when they click a link. That defeats security protocol etc. What do you do for the users that don't have IE installed?

I'm not sure I agree.

Almost all computers will have ".htm" associated with "some browser", so the link will cause something to happen. I don't see that much difference between "some browser" and "a browser" or "a specific browser".

But ok.

Is there a client side solution perhaps? A way to associate links to a specific domain to a specific browser?

All users in this case will have IE installed, but it may not be set as the default browser.
