FM user guide is pretty straightforward on how to do this, but we cannot get it to work.

I have 2 query subjects test and test2

Test holds dataitem C_DEPT
Test2 holds dataitem N_DEPT

I have added a filter to Test that reads:

DEPARTMENT.C_DEPT = ?Choose department?

Prompt info on C_DEPT:

Prompt type: select value
Display item reference: TEST2.N_DEPT
Use item reference: TEST.C_DEPT

Where are we missing the boat, should everything be in one query subject?

Hi Wallace,

As a lifetime Business Objects developer I am really struggling with the way Cognos deals with filters and prompts. The concept of 'prompt control' is a new one.

I am still under the impression that adding a filter like:

[dataitem] = ?Choose department?

is the equivalent of getting a prompt.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The following strategy does work properly:

1. Define standalone filter with prompt expression:
[model].[Test].[XCode] = ?Select a description?
2. Set prompt type details on Code to:
prompt type : Select Value
display item reference: [model].[test2].[description]
use item reference : [model].[test].[Xcode]
3. Drag the standalone filter into the report

This produces the correct behavior, but only when the filter is added as an additional object in a report.

To be precise: This works for RS, but does not work in QS..

But the ultimate goal is to achieve the result without having to drag a standalone filter in report studio..

Open to any suggestion!
