Hello,

I have a windows small business server 2003 and was wondering if it is possible to have a custom application installed on client computers without an administrator's privileges (local or domain).

I used the assign client applications link from the server management console and it works as long as the user's login into the computer is an admin. I want it to be able to allow this program to be installed by anyone who is in the domain users group even if they are not in the local administrators group for the workstation.

Is this possible?

Thank you in advance

if you are pushing an msi, then you can apply the application to the Computer upon startup. No user interaction required.

If this is being done by GPO; make sure you give domain computers permission on the GPO itself.

hello,

thanks for the reply,

I tried to set up the install through a gpo (using this info but it kept giving a error:

The install of application APPLICATION NAME from policy POLICY NAME failed. The error was : The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

I gave permission to this gpo to all domain users and set up the gpo to always wait for the network connections at start-up, as suggested in another post I found.

Ultimatley I would like to be able to unistall the old version of this program and install the new version when certain computers log in without the need for user input.

I have a windows sbs 2003 with all windows xp pro workstations

it need to be located in a network shared location that domain computers can access. grant access to that share location for the domain computer account (builtin)

TechyMcSe2k,

thanks, it worked on one computer, I found an area where the security was not set properly.

One last question, is there a way to get the group policy to run a script that will unistall the previous version (ie: MsiExec.exe /x{7280B3BC-0A60-4795-90FF-D93B045F24C7} /quiet) before installing the new version?

The trick is to finding out if the GPO would run a startup script first, and then the msi package. Sounds like a test environment project :)
