I'm Using Win XP Pro and I've tried to update the firmware on a SCSI Drive but I keep getting "ASPI Manager not Installed"

I tried to Flash using the DOS command with the files that upgrade the Drive.

I used Aspicheck tool and find that I have version 4.70 -4.60 versions of the ASPI files.

Any Ideas?

Thank you for all the info, I've tried all the ASPI updates, changes from 4.7.1.2 to 4.60 to using Nero wnaspi32.dll, booted form floppy, used the Accesories Dos Command, Changed the Register with 00000002 from 00000001 as suggested, all with no avail, I still get "ASPI Manger Not Installed".

I did note that it says MANGER not manager, don't know if this is significant or not, but the issue is that I can't get to run the upgrade.

At the DOS prompt I write UPG5S /0 305x105.HEX being UPG5S the exe program for the Firmware Update of a SCSI Pioneer DVD-305S drive with the SCSI ID 0, and the HEX file.

When I press enter after writing UPG5S /0 305x105.HEX I get the following:

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\HPSCAN16.SYS
ASPI Manger not found.

C:\>

I have the DVD Drive (SCSI ID 0) and a HP Scanner (SCSI ID 3) running on a Adaptec SCSI Card 2906.

The Drive has problems reading DVD's and reads Music CD's with no problem. The Scanner works Great, thus the need for a firmware UPDATE on the Drive.

Thanks again for the help.

You are accessing the registry - it seems that the computer is looking for a driver(?) in the "c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\" directory.

If I run UPG5S.exe on the Dos Prompt I get just:

ASPI Manger not found

I tried to run it on SAFE MODE and the results are the same.

Changed the SCSI ID down the list from 0 to 7 just in case but the ASPI Manger not found shows up everytime.

Try creating a Windows ME OEM boot diskette from and when booted, select the "with CD-ROM support" option. This option will load various DOS ASPI drivers, of which one will hopefully work for you.

The readme files for this update also says " -Pioneer recommends that all other devices be removed from the chain then Set the drive ID to 0 via the jumper pin on the rear of the drive.

Yes !!!!! .......... Yes !!!! That did it ......

This is my Best information screen in a while

Thank you so much ..... I was about to give up, really!!!

Last night I got an OLD pentium (plain 166MHz) running and placed the SCSI card and the DVD Drive in it to try and get to flash the update, but the ADAPTEC card AVA-2609 is a real, real pain to get the drivers going. I didn't.

So today I went back to the great Tek-Tips page and found the SOLUTION that Freestone gave us and there it is............

Thank you again !!!!!

OK ....... the above issue about the ASPI Manger is resolved for sure ... and this Thread should be used as a solution to this ASPI Manager Not Found problem in Windows XP. I must say that I looked everywhere on the web without finding what I learned here.

Now ...... the Pioneer DVD-305S or DVD-U05S SCSI DVD/CD-ROM Drive.

It is SCSI attached with a NARROW (50 pin connector) to the SCSI ADAPTEC 2906 card directly. On the out DB25 pin connector on the card there is a HP SCANNER 6100 attached with SCSI ID 3 (This works perfectly).

1) The DVD305S has a jump connector for placing TERMINATION OFF or ON. Should this be ON or OFF. The TERMINATION definition is kind of confusing (to me)specially if asked what it is on or what is off.

When I place a CDRW or a DVD-RW that has data on it, I can't read it. Is this NORMAL for this SCSI drive? another DVD/CD drive reads these disks with no problem.

If I insert a "burned" DVD+R it does not read it as such.

It does read Original DVD's and plays them with out any problem.

It reads ALL Music CD's perfectly.

I believed that the new Firmware would fix any of these problems, but it does exactly the same as before.

Now, could it be the TERMINATION issue or something with the SCSI card? Or the drive is not up to it.

Thanks for any pointers....

Doesn't mention DVD+R or +RW, but does say it should read CD-R and -RW, it might be that it doesn't like the brand of -R or -RW media you are using.

BTW, if you do not have another device on the SCSI chain after this device, you want to turn termination to ON.

That has to be it, the DVD's are +RW,the CDRWs are Memorex 10x, also the system get really slow when I introduce one of these into the drive and it checks the disk (over and over, every 30sec for 7sec or so, and if I eject it everything gets back to normal... and Windows displays the "What do you want to do with this disk?" window (after the disk has ejected) ....... hummm?.

However as for the "Burnt" DVD+R, I believed that a DVD+R after it was "burned" it became "neutral"? Guess not!!?

I did have an HP WRITER DVD200j that only used + DVDs.

Well I guess we learn along the way.

Thanks to everyone and ALL of you for the great help with these problems.

Well, some more news on the Pioneer 305S .......

The not reading "problem" is a software issue

I have a 40GB HD with WinXP SP2 that I was using before I upgraded to 120GB, and I happened to plug it in as a Master, looking for something, which had all the same hardware that I have now, and this is what I discovered:

The SCSI Pioneer 305S READS EVERYTHING I put into it !!!!! I mean all and any CD+RW - DVD+RW - Burned DVD+R and the rest with NO problem and reads immediately.

So it has to be a SOFTWARE issue somewhere. All the hardware is the same with each MASTER HD.

Any ideas??? who might be the culprit that is causing the "choke up"?. I have added so many programs to my new 120GB Master HD ... that can't remember when the 305S started (or noticed) the handicap.

.
.

It's IN-CD from Nero. Ver 4.3.11.1. It's the one that blocks the SCSI Drive.

I uninstall IN-CD and the SCSI Drive works perfectly.

Re-install it and it gets the problems.

Any suggestions?

Yes, check Nero website to see their FAQ section to see if there is a fix for this. Also check their updates and downloads section for mention of this issue.
Glad you at least found the problem.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

This is the update on the SCSI Problem with Nero's INCD. I wrote them explaning the problem and received the note at the end, instructions which I will follow and let you guys know the results from Nero's Support. In the mean time I UNinstalled INCD and am using Nero Express with the Multisesion enabled, which by the way produces a FAR MORE compatible CDRW which ANY computer can read without any problem.

This is what I got from NERO.
