I'm wondering of anyone has managed to get an aspect script to work with Oracle via ODBC. I've managed in the past to write scripts that read & write to MS Access using DDE, but what I'd really like is to read and write to a network oracle database. I would welcome any help.

I've never written a script to interface with Oracle, so my knowledge is very limited in that regards. Is it possible to access Oracle via DDE? I did a quick Google search and it looks like Oracle can communicate via DDE, but it wasn't clear to me if it can be controlled by a DDE client.

I was looking at an Excel book where they describe using MSQuery as a go between between external databases and Excel. From the sounds of it you should be able to use DDE to interface from Procomm to MSQuery and ODBC from MSQuery to Oracle. Not sure if you can download the Oracle ODBC driver for MSQuery for free or if MS charges for it though. I think MSQuery is included with Excel.
It would not be direct but at least you might be able to remove Excel from the equation.

Otherwise it sounds to me like an interesting programming project to write an aspect DLL for ODBC support.
Unfortunately that is well beyond my current capabilities and I don't expect that to change for a year or more...

The book I was looking at is EXCEL Professional Techniques by QUE, covering Excel ver 5, copyright 1994.
A little dated but the info seems to be fairly good.

Hope this helps, D.T.

Hi DT

I've tried using MSquery & DDE but didn't get very far and it's not the elegant solution that I'm looking for. I agree that it's probably going to need an apect dll for ODBC support, too bad I'm a long way from being able to complete a project like this. I wonder if anyone has some code that might help me get started with a dll like this (other than the generic example that is provided by symantec?).
