If I design a web site using Visual Studio .NET (VB) with ASP will anyone who wants to view the web page have to download the .NET framework? Also, will I have to have a .NET server to serve the page?

Sorry for the generic question. I haven't been in VS since 5 and a little in 6. But I have to do some research on web dev and I'm looking into VS. Any help would be appreciated.

tomed: It is my understanding that the server of course will have to have the .NET framework, as well as your local server (along with IIS, etc) but a client using the website will recieve all information in HTML format and so will not require an installation of the .NET software.

Isadore,

Thanks for the quick reply. The reason I ask is because we have an outside company that's going to do our hosting. I spoke with them and their answer on this question was "we have .NET but it is not implemented". They said ETA for implementation was "soon".

If I understand you correctly I will not be able to use ASP.NET to develop our site and have them host it. I'm not going to begin work on the site until at least the first of next year so there's a chance that they will have it by then. But I don't know if I can take that chance. Do you have any suggestions?

I would tell the company that you need .NET hosting by ___ date. If they cannot provide this then tell them you may need to go elsewhere to get the site hosted. If they are actually considering putting the .Net framework up then it won't be a problem. Remember you are paying them to do a service for you, they want your business so you have the power here. That'l do donkey, that'l do
