ASP 2.0 How to set dropdownlist.text=""

I have search web form with dropdownlist which is bound to datatable. When page is loaded I want dropdownlist.text to be empty because it is optional parameter for search.
When I set dropdownlist.text="" I got error.
How to solve this?

Add a new ListItem to the DropDownList via the Items.Add method with the relevant Text and Value properties
