Asks for Network Pasword

I'll try and keep this short.

Have 2 computers connected through a LinkSys wired router. One had WinMe and the other Win98. The Win98 computer is my knock-a-round beta machine.

I could connect to the WinMe OK to transfer files etc.

I just upgraded the WinMe computer to WinXP Professional with no problems. Can connect to the old Win98 computer OK and mapped it as a Z drive.

But now when I go to Network Places and try and access the WinXP computer from the Win98 computer it asks me for a "Newtwork Password" where it never did before.

It comes up with - Resource: \\CX597943-A\\IPC$ and then a field to enter the password.

CX597943-A is the name of the WinXP computer.

I don't remember ever setting any passwords. If I did I always use a variation of one password and have tried every combination and it still asks for a password.

Any suggestions on getting past this.

Does the winXP machine have anything shared on it? In my experiences of the past, if you try to connect to a computer running windows xp and it isn't sharing anything it will just come up with a password box.

First, on the Win98 box, create a new "Microsoft Network" account JRandom. It will whirl and copy and transfer settings for a while desperately attempting some unnecessary DWIMmery. Reboot the 98 box and actually log in with the newly created account. Now, go back to the XP box, and create a local account to that computer called JRandom with the same password you gave the 98 account. Make sure XP's JRandom has rw access to the share. Finally, from the 98 box, you can enter \\computername\sharename and have it just work (even though the two accounts are completely separate, have nothing intrinsically in common except they are the same name and password).

Thanks for both of your replies.

Your first one sort of fits the bill. Since I wasn't getting this Password dialog box with WinME, I assumed it had to do with the XP installation. So I went tinkering around in the XP machine and started to check off some "sharing" options and rebooting and all of a sudden I was able to "see" the XP machine from the 98 machine and actually open some folders.

I was getting some access denied messages, so I thing I have to go back to the XP machine a fine tune the permissions.

So you were on thr right track and I sort of stumbled down the same path. Just love these things!!!!

I was out of town for the weekend so didn't get to tinker further. Will try again maybe this evening.

I am totally baffled by netintern's posts above. This is a common issue between the different security models of Win9x and any NT 5.x version of Windows, including XP; and easy enough to solve:
