Hi,

I am using DDS-3 tapes (12G/24G) capacity. My data is not more that 16G, but it always asks for a blank tape after backing up around 14G. Any suggestions on using the tape to it's full potential?

thanx

baba
In arcserve there are two kinds of compression allowable Hardware & Software...there is no doubt ..cos i have had exactly the same problem... that your hardware compression, which is crap, is enabled which means that even though you check the compress data box when scheduling the backup this is overruled by the hardware compression...If you check the back up log you will see a message at the start of each session saying "W3022 compression is disabled due to hardware compression". To turn hardware compression off you need to go to manager in the toolbar...then device..click on your DAT drive....a dialog box will appear on the left handside.....click the detail tab...to toggle compression on & off click the compression icon on the top toolbar but remember to turn the hardware compression off you will need to insert a Blank media into the DAT drive.
I hope this helps
Bumble
There are a couple of things can effect the amount of data compression that you'll get during a backup. The primary one being the type of files you are backing up. Graphic files won't compress much more than 5 to 10 percent. If you have an NT drive or folder set as compressed you're not going to compress the files much more during the backup.

I average about 8% compression when I backup 350 gig of graphic files on one server and about 30% compression on a server that is primarily application and data files.
I use a DDS-3 tapes (12GB/24GB) to backup data is under 12GB. However, it always asks for a blank tape after backing up around 11.2GB. Any suggestion would be appreciate. Thanks,
