Ask for Lgoin when use SPItemList.Update()

I am working on an project and need to retrieve and update metadata we created in Sharepoint (2003). Everything works fine until recently... The problem is really strange: we did not change any settings on server. But it starts to ask for login information whenever we use GetItemById() or SPItemList.Update(). These 2 methods was working without asking for login information until recently... and it seems we will get more methods will ask for login information.

Any idea what causes these problems and how can I fix it?
