What is the ashade layer? There is only one object on this layer and it is a grid. I can't delete it or turn it off. It is annoying since it sits at 0,0. Purging does not work either. I am using autocad 2000i

thanks

The "ashade" layer is created whenever you use the Render command. It inserts an unknown block that can't be seen, but if you use "bcount" from the Express Tools you will see something like:
Code:
Block...........Count
---------------------
AVE_RENDER......8
AVE_GLOBAL......1
To get rid of it, first make a template DWG that you can use with the layers you want and save it. Next, use "laytrans" from the Express Tools and load the template dwg you made. Next, pick the "ashade" layer and choose the layer you want to change it to.
NOTE: This will get rid of the layer "ashade", but you will still have the unseen blocks.

thank you for your reply, when you say "NOTE: This will get rid of the layer "ashade", but you will still have the unseen blocks"

does that mean that the grid that I see in the drawing will still be there?

thanks
