We have a W2k vpn server sitting behind a Linux RH7.2 firewall. I can make a successful vpn connection when I dial through my modem but get "error 678 - no answer" via my ADSL router (or from any LAN). The f\w lets anything through on ports 1723 and 47 to the vpn server. I have used this same router to vpn to another site and that works ok so I don't think the problem is with the router or ISP. Is there a setting I can play with on the current vpn box?

Common problem. One that I've seen way too many times on this board. You stated:

"The f\w lets anything through on ports 1723 and 47 to the vpn server."

W2K server uses PPTP protocol for VPN. PPTP uses TCP port 1723 and IP protocol 47(which is GRE). NOT TCP or UDP port 47. Forwarding port 47 will not help you. You need to allow IP protocol 47 through or if your router has some sort of PPTP passthrough, this does the same thing.

Oh and BTW, I looked up port 47. It is for something called NI-FTP whatever that is.
