Hi All,

Thanks in advance!

We have a few remote users that connect via VPN thru our ASA 5505 using the Cisco VPN client and then they use the Avaya softphone from their pc/laptop. They complain that the voice quality stinks about 75% of the time. They say that they sound choppy and like they are in a tunnel.

I checked the ASA ASDM, Monitoring, and chose to monitor Drop Packet Count, Byte Counts, and Packet Errors for the Interface Outside. I see that the Drop Packet count is at a constant 1,484. Nothing on the packet errors and the Input Byte count on the Byte Counts shows a to be steady at a range of 180,645,042 (give or take a couple hundred).

Is the drop packet count normally in that range?

have you enabled qos??

unclerico,

I assume that you are talking about qos on the ASA and not the remote user's pc/laptop?

If so, can I check that on the ASDM or do I need to do a show run on the cmd line

do a show run class-map and/or a show run policy-map. If you don't have anything beyond the inspection_default class-map and the global_policy policy-map then you don't have qos configured.

I'm not familiar with the Avaya softphones. Do they support qos??

I would suggest contacting Avaya support and asking them. If it does, ask them if it marks the traffic at layer 2 (CoS) or layer 3 (DSCP).
