AS400 COBOL TCP/IP Sockets

I am not a Cobol developer, but I am involved in a project where we need call an external application server (Unix) from COBOL on an AS400. Does anyone have sample code showing how to do this via TCP/IP Sockets? I already have some example code using CICS and MVS, but I'm looking for code to run on an AS400. Please advise on even if this is possible and what options do I have (outside of MQSeries).
