AS2K not backing up SQL 7 SP4 DBs

I have three SQL 7 DB Servers. Two are at Service Pack Level 3 and I can back them up no problem at all. One is at Service Pack 4 and it will not back up.

In the arcserve manager I can see it, see all the databases, enter security agent information... do everything. However, when the job starts it immediately goes to 'backup' mode and does not perform a calculations like the other two DB servers that do work. It tries to back up each of the databases (I can see their names, size, everything) but it never backs up anything. It just sits there at zero until it times out and then moves to the next database. When it eventually times out and moves to the next one it writes the log info as "Error 68 - Error status in named pipe."

Researching this error on CA's site (which is all but pointless for everything) gives nothing but info on Exchange agents.

This server was being backed up perfectly until SP4 went on. Wondering if anybody else out there has this problem or knows a fix.

Thanks.

When you say sp3 and sp4 are you talking about ARCserve sp3 and sp4? If so, then the first thing you must do is apply the SAME service pack to all of the machines. The ARCserve server and agent should both be at the same sp level.

Another thing to look at is the registry. When you install the agent you get the option of using "named pipes" and "tcp/ip". This option applies to both the ODBC connection to SQL and the communication method used for backups and restores. I suggest using tcp/ip since it is much faster (uses SQL VDI) than named pipes. You can change this by setting the UseTCP registry value to 1. It is under HKLM\Software\ComputerAssociates\ARCserveIT\DSAgent\CurrentVersion\agent\dbasql... If UseTCP is set to 0, then the agent will use named pipes.
