My apologies for obviously overlooking something, but my question is this:
In a multiserver environment, what is the correct way to setup the Exchange 2000 Agent to backup Brick Level, when the tape drive is NOT located on the Exchange server?
My problems are this. I've successfully installed Arcserve on the server with the tape drive. I've successfully installed the Remote Agent on all servers in the domain EXCEPT the Exchange server. It appears as though I can NOT install the Exchange Agent unless the full version of Arcserve is installed on then same server. However, without the remote agent on this server, the server with the actual tape drive cant connect to it, NOT TO MENTION, since the jobs I "thought" should originate from the server that actually has Arcserve installed on it and has the tape drive, that server doesnt see the Exchange Options, since the Exchange Agent is NOT installed on it.
What should I do? I've tried installing the remote client on the Exchange server, installing the Exchange Agent on the same server as Arcserve, but the Exchange Agent fails. So the only thing that I see now is that I"ve installed Arcserve on 2 servers. One is the main server with the tape drive, it backs itself up and all servers with the remote agent. I've also installed Arserve on the mail server, installed the Exchange Agent (which correctly logs in now), and I've created a job on it, redirecting the output to the first server that actually has the tape drive in it.
Without sounding bitter, I've got to say that this situation coincides with EVERYTHING that I"ve experienced with Computer Associates. Their software has GOT to be the WORST thing ever created in the computer world. This will officially be the LAST piece of software from CAI that I"ll ever sell to a client. It appears as though their programmers are clueless when laying out how things should work that make sense. Their PDF documentation tells of NOTHING of how things work, and if your situation is not exactly like their "examples" then you're on your own to figure out how to make it work. Note to everyone when it comes to backup. For the same price, you can get BackupExec from Veritas. Install ALL options on ONE server. Thats it. Not this option on this server that launches as a seperate service on that server, you install it on the server that you install the darn program. Open Files, Exchange, Oracle, etc etc. CAI's products somehow sometimes seem to work, but its HOW they work that makes absolutely no sense. Like going to the moon and back to get to your neighbors house.
